DALLAS SUMMER MUSICALS KICKS OFF YEAR-LONG CELEBRATION
OF THEIR 75TH YEAR WITH SEASON ANNOUNCEMENT EVENT JUNE 12

DALLAS, TX…Dallas Summer Musicals, Inc. (DSM) announced their 2014/2015 season of shows at Fair Park Thursday June 12. Heavy rain forecasts moved the 75-Year kickoff event from the Fair Park Band Shell where DSM first performed their shows to the nearby Centennial Building. DSM has been bringing the Best of Broadway to North Texas audiences with the finest in professional live theatrical entertainment since 1941.

Michael A. Jenkins, President and Managing Director of Dallas Summer Musicals, said, “We believe in creating memories that will last a lifetime, so our 75th year will be filled with musicals offering an unforgettable experience for everyone in the family. We will kick off the 2015 season with a hilarious musical straight from Broadway, A CHRISTMAS STORY, in December of 2014. Three of our 2015 shows are still playing on Broadway, and one has never been seen outside of Australia.”

In addition to the 2014/2015 shows, Jenkins also announced that DSM’s collaboration with Performing Arts Fort Worth (PAFW) would be extended to include four touring Broadway shows that will be presented by DSM and PAFW at their separate venues. KINKY BOOTS, DIRTY DANCING, RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN’S CINDERELLA, and PIPPIN will be presented by DSM at the Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas and by PAFW at Bass Hall in Fort Worth.

“This is a partnership that has worked well in the past,” Jenkins said, “and we are looking forward to working closely with President and CEO Dione Kennedy and our colleagues at PAFW as we plan future seasons. We will also produce our own version of RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN’S THE KING & I, as we did with our 2014 production of Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID. Our efforts to reach new audiences, and to bring the latest Broadway shows to North Texas, include investing in and producing shows on Broadway and expanding our DSM High School Musical Theatre Awards, which last year brought 56 Texas schools together to compete for recognition and scholarships. Our DSM Academy of Performing Arts also provides valuable training to students of music, dance and acting with locations across the Metroplex.”

The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West, and he seeks Anna’s assistance in changing his image, if not his ways. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and eventually respect one another in a truly unique love story. Associated Press said, “Pure Magic! Broadway’s new Cinderella crackles with sweetness and freshness.”

DIRTY DANCING, June 23-July 5, 2015.

The classic story on stage is an unprecedented live experience, exploding with heart-pounding music, passionate romance, and sensational dancing. Seen by millions across the globe, this smash hit musical tells the classic story of two fiercely independent young spirits from difference worlds who come together for the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives. Featuring the hit songs “Hungry Eyes,” “Hey Baby,” “Do You Love Me?” and the heart stopping “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” this record-breaking live theatre sensation offers audiences the time of their lives.

PIPPIN, July 7-19, 2015.

The 2013 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Revival, PIPPIN is a magical, unforgettable production The New York Times declared “Astonishing! A PIPPIN for the 21st Century.” Direct from Broadway and back for the first time since it thrilled audiences 40 years ago, with a beloved score by Tony nominee Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Wicked), PIPPIN tells the story of a young prince on a death-defying journey to find meaning in his existence. Will he choose a happy but simple life? Or will he risk everything for a singular flash of glory? DSM Hear Us Now – T-Loop Technology

DSM Hear Us Now LOGO

DSM Hear Us Now!™
Dallas Summer Musicals Launches T-Loop Technology at the Music Hall at Fair Park!

DSM is the first entertainment venue in Dallas to implement this exciting hearing assist system.

(December 16, 2013 – Dallas, TX)  Dallas Summer Musicals (DSM) is the first live entertainment venue in Dallas to implement T Loop technology, the newest system for hearing assistance, at the Music Hall at Fair Park.

T Loop is a technology which transmits the sound from the stage electro-magnetically.   The electromagnetic signal is then picked up by the telecoil, or Tcoil, in the hearing aid or cochlear implant.

“This will bring the better quality of T Loop to our patrons who have T Loop on their hearing aids,” said Michael A. Jenkins, President and Managing Director, DSM.  “Part of our overall technology approach goes beyond T Loop by providing DSM’s Hear Us Now!™  sound enhancements to all hearing assist users, not just T Loop users. This ongoing effort encompasses not only the T Loop technology, but everything we’ve done to enhance the sound experience for everyone as well as additional dedicated processing for all hearing assist users.”
Barry Epstein, honorary co-chair of Curtain Call 2014 with his wife, Paddy, is a member of the DSM 2013 Executive Committee, a longtime DSM supporter and is the go-to expert on the sound system improvements at the Music Hall at Fair Park. Barry is the recipient of an Outstanding Electrical and Computer Engineer Award, and in 2011, named a Distinguished Alumnus from Purdue University and has served as chairman of Purdue University’s Computer and Electrical Engineering Advisory Board.  His bio is attached.

“Over the past few years we have dramatically improved the sound and acoustics hearing system for everyone, not just the hard of hearing,” Barry said. “Additional improvements for the hearing assist systems have included syllable by syllable volume adjustment, enhancing the balance between music components and voice and we have added electronics to compensate for the building acoustics effect on hearing assist users. These are concepts not consistently used. We have done tremendous research to see what the advancements are that we can provide our hearing assist users. We have done them all.”

DSM has better headsets especially suited for these new features. The headsets are high powered enough they could be used in the place of a hearing aid.

Bud Porter, a former DSM Chairman of the Board, experienced the T Loop system first-hand at a recent performance.  In a testimonial letter, he said, “The Dallas Summer Musicals T Loop system electronically transmits pure stage sound directly into the electronics of a user’s hearing aid.  The electronic transmission directly into a hearing aid eliminates the typical acoustic problems (echoes, reverberation, noise) of conventional approaches.  Then, since a hearing aid is customized to each user’s special hearing needs, this same custom tuning tailors the stage sound to achieve the best possible result.  And, the results are fantastic.  I can’t tell you how much more I enjoyed the show! I would like to share the good news of this new technology with as many people as possible so they can experience the same new pleasure that I am.”

With the T Loop implementation, DSM is the first and only theater in Dallas to join the elite ranks of the Helen Beaumont Theater and Gershwin Theater, both in New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

FROM THE BACK ROW: The Ghost Light

Hey DSM Fans!

Ghost Light:  A single bulb that stands onstage and remains on at all times.  It’s a safety precaution for the first person entering or the last to leave a dark theater.  While it serves a practical purpose, the ghost light gets its name from a popular theatrical superstition.  Legend tells us that every theater has a ghost, and the ghost light wards off these spirits known for causing mischief in the dark.  Some say this ritual dates all the way back to the Shakespearean era, when a candle was left burning to rid the theater of spirits from a previous performance.

In honor of the 2012 State Fair musical, THE ADDAMS FAMILY, the Music Hall is currently home to an exclusive display of original props from the set of the 1960s TV series, The Addams Family!

I’m a sucker for a good ghost story, so all of the spooky décor just adds fuel to the fire of my ghostly thoughts.  It’s hard not to consider the possibility of supernatural activity here in the 87-year-old Music Hall at Fair Park…

I wanted answers.  Although my expectations were low, I asked staff members if they had any tales of a potential Music Hall Phantom.  Surprisingly, the response was better than I had anticipated!  Some employees shared word-of-mouth tales and others brought up unusual cases of moved or missing desk items. However, I received two very creepy (and very genuine) first-person accounts of paranormal encounters here at the Music Hall.

DSM President, Michael Jenkins:

[It was 1:30 in the morning, and Michael was working late.  The bathroom adjacent to his office has two doors, one in his office and one out in the hall.]  “It’s around 1:30 am and I heard this bathroom doorknob turn. …Keep in mind these are pretty heavy doors…  Since this door in my office was closed, I stepped into the hall and went around the corner to check the other bathroom door, but it was closed too.  Initially I thought, ‘Well, I can’t just open the door to check it out… there might be someone in there!’  So I walked back down the hall, into my office and I sat down at my desk.  Seconds later, I heard that heavy door SLAM shut. I immediately said to myself, ‘I’m out of here.’ And I left!”

DSM’s IT Manager, Shawn:

The servers were down, and Shawn was working on them in the wee hours of the morning.  He heard the sound of a door and thought it was an engineer.  Shawn peeked out of his office and saw a short, bald man dressed in white rounding the corner at the end of the hall.  Confused, Shawn called out to him but the man didn’t answer.  He just passed through the doorway at the end of the hall, closing the door behind him.  Shawn followed the man and tried to open the door, but it was locked.  He quickly unlocked and opened the door, only to find a dark hallway and no sign of the man in white. Shawn assured me that he was never a believer in the supernatural until this moment, and after this encounter he found himself walking a bit faster through the Music Hall’s sometimes too-quiet corridors.

At this point in time, Dallas Summer Musicals does not have a ghost light but it certainly sounds like we could use one!

Planning to attend the State Fair? Don’t forget to pay DSM a visit!  If you enter through the fair’s Front Gate, just make a sharp right and come by the Music Hall to check out our FREE display of The Addams Family props and to purchase your ADDAMS FAMILY tickets.  If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the Music Hall Phantom!

THE ADDAMS FAMILY is on stage now through October 21st!

FROM THE BACK ROW: Haley's Hall History

Hey DSM Fans!

As I have said before,  it’s time to wipe the dust off of our star-studded past and bring it out into the spotlight!  I’ve lived in the Dallas/Fort Worth area my whole life and I never knew about the rich history behind The Music Hall at Fair Park and Dallas Summer Musicals, so I thought the DSM fans might enjoy a brief history lesson!

The Music Hall at Fair Park opened its doors in 1925, but the Starlight Operettas (which later became Dallas Summer Musicals) originated in the Fair Park Band Shell.

A series of ten shows were presented that year, and another ten in 1944.  The State Fair Association decided the Starlight Operettas needed a full-time executive director, so they turned to the legendary, Charles R. Meeker.  Meeker was responsible for transforming the summer musical series into the organization that would become Dallas Summer Musicals.

Charles R. Meeker

Meeker oversaw the move into the music hall in 1951.  Throughout the 50s, Meeker kept the stars marching across the stage of the Music Hall – Debbie Reynolds, Jack Benny, Judy Garland and many, many more.

A tall, bronze statue stands in the lobby- watching over the Music Hall and grinning at passing guests.  Any vintage Summer Musicals fan will immediately recognize the lifelike figure of Mr. Tom Hughes.

Tom Hughes

Tom Hughes had stars like Liza Minnelli, Ginger Rogers, Carol Burnett and Robert Goulet marching across the stage! Although Hughes followed in some giant footsteps when he took over for Charles Meeker, he left a distinct and enviable legacy behind.  For more than three decades, he was considered to be nothing less than “Mr. Summer Musicals.”

In 1994, DSM season subscriber, board member and executive committee member Michael Jenkins, was the first person called to help Dallas Summer Musicals following the untimely death of Tom Hughes.  His interest was simply to get the Musicals back on firm footing, then leave the operation to others.  Instead, he quickly found himself devoted to not one, but two full time careers!

Michael Jenkins

Like Meeker and Hughes, Michael Jenkins continues to bring stars to the stage:  Tommy Tune, Cathy Rigby, Stephanie J. Block, Norbert Leo Butz, Lea Solonga, Diana Degarmo, Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal, and the list goes on!

One last thing – Check out all of the nominations and awards DSM has received – WOW!
There’s  more information on our website.  Take a look at DSM’s extensive Show History, and check out the List of Stars who have graced the Music Hall’s stage.   I’m constantly fascinated by the stories I hear about Dallas Summer Musicals and I have discovered that The Music Hall at Fair Park is quite a magical place!

FROM THE BACK ROW: A Minute With Michael

Hey DSM Fans!

I sat down to chat with Dallas Summer Musicals’ President and Managing Director, THE Michael Jenkins.  I love talking to Michael because he has SO MANY wonderful stories, and I get to pick his brain about The Music Hall, DSM and Broadway in general.  There is a lot of information about him on our website, so I decided to go the “Getting to Know You” route, and ask Michael a very random assortment of questions.

Before we get started, here’s a brief summary of DSM’s legacy of leaders:

1945 – The first of three men, who have guided Dallas Summer Musicals for most of its fabled history, to take control of the theater was Charles R. Meeker.  Meeker served as mentor to two young men – Tom Hughes and Michael Jenkins in the 1940’s and 1950’s.

1961 – Meeker resigned his post to produce shows at the new Six Flags Over Texas, taking a young usher and assistant named Michael Jenkins with him.  Tom Hughes, then the house manager at the Music Hall, took over.  During his long tenure at the helm of the Summer Musicals, Hughes became nationally recognized as one of the most astute and successful producers of musical theatre in the country.  He was also one of the most likable and congenial figures you might ever meet in or outside the world of theatre.

1994 – Following the untimely death of DSM’s beloved Hughes, Michael Jenkins answered a call to help save the theatre. He quickly put together a season for the summer of 1995, intending to simply get the theater “up and going” before handing it off to others, but lucky for us, he’s still here!

(The above information was taken from the DSM History page on our website)

If you can’t pick a favorite, are there any shows that have a special meaning?

Flower Drum Song – When I was 8 years old, I stayed with my grandma over the summer.  It was so hot that she wouldn’t let me go outside.  That summer, we listened to the music of Flower Drum Song and I learned every song.  I even drew a picture of the stage and all the scenery that I imagined while listening to it.  Actually, we just found it!  It’s off getting framed as we speak.

[Michael never would have imagined that later he’d produce the Broadway production and the national tour]

If you could stay a certain age forever, what would it be? – 39 –

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Walk on a tight wire in the circus

If you could be any fictional character, which would you choose?  Mickey Mouse

Do you have any hobbies?  I collect Disney ceramics.  I have the largest collection outside of Disney at 1,942 pieces.  My collection once belonged to Walt’s secretary, Lucille Martin.

[When the Disney ceramics were made, Walt always got the very first one, or the #1s.  The #2s went to Roy. Walt’s daughters got #3 & #4.  And Walt gave his secretary, Lucille, the #5s.  Michael’s collection is very valuable because it’s ALL #5s.]

What story does your family always tell about you?

When I was at Baylor, my political science teacher gave us a project:  We had 6 weeks to draw a political cartoon.  I had forgotten about it until the last minute.  So I went to the store and bought a pack of construction paper.  I opened the package and pulled out the black piece.  I put my name on it and called it “The Dark Ages.”  I got an A!  All my classmates hated me.

Also, I used to take the first ride on new roller coasters.  …I was only hurt one time.

[Michael flew about 17 feet in the air, IF he had fallen 1ft. outside of the space he landed in, Michael might not be here today!]

What was the first “big” thing you bought with your own money?

Well, you know the story of my first theatre investment, right?…

[When Michael was 17, he decided that he wanted to invest in a Broadway show.  The minimum investment was $5,000.  Michael worked a whole summer painting numbers on seats in the Cotton Bowl and he made close to $2,500.  Knowing she’d probably never see the money again, Michael’s mom generously loaned him the other half.  With the money, Michael took a chance on a little show – maybe you’ve heard of it? – called, My Fair Lady.  So, needless to say, Michael bought his mom a new car.]

Best advice you’ve ever received?

John Stemmons once told me, “You never learn anything talking.”

Do you pass it on, or do you have your own piece of advice to give?

“Customer service is not everything, customer service is the only thing.”

A huge thank you to Mr. Jenkins for taking the time to talk with me!

FROM THE BACK ROW: She's Flying!

Hey DSM Fans!

Yesterday, Luke and I were given the chance to take part in PETER PAN media day here at the Music Hall at Fair Park!   We got to interview cast members and watch as Cathy Rigby gave flying lessons to a few lucky people, including our very own: Michael Jenkins.

Michael Jenkins & Cathy Rigby

We found out that Emily Emmett (named Best Actress at DSM’s High School Musical Theatre Awards) grew up watching the video of Cathy Rigby as PETER PAN, and she has also played Peter.  Needless to say, she is a huge fan of both the show and Cathy.  So what did we do?  We invited her to hang out with us for the day!

Luke, Emily & Haley

After finishing our cast interviews [Coming Soon!], we headed for the theater to take in some good, old-fashioned flying lessons.  As we opened the theater doors, a starry blue sky expanded across our horizon.  The sight caused Emily to squeak, “Oh my gosh! Stars!” as she hurried through the doorway.  Inside, Cathy was teaching a few of our local news anchors how to soar high above the stage.  Following her instruction to “think lovely thoughts,” and a shower of fairy dust, they were hoisted into the air in a quick fluid motion.  It seems the secret to flying as gracefully as Cathy is remembering to arch your back. – For those of you who plan on flying to Neverland in the near future…

Between lessons, Cathy moved to the opposite side of the stage for interviews.  My ears perked up when I heard her mention the DSM High School Musical Theater Awards.  (Back in May, Cathy presented Emily with the award for Best Actress.) Emily and I inched closer and closer until we were leaning against the orchestra pit, intently listening and a little in awe of our proximity to the  Tony Award® nominee.

Eventually, I was told to “take Emily up there!”  Onstage, we shuffled through a pile of fairy dust, took a closer look at the flying system’s ropes and pulleys, and Emily gave her best PETER PAN pose for a photo.  Next thing I know, Cathy is waving her over! They stood arm in arm as Cathy showered her with praise and told bystanders that she’s glad she didn’t have to compete with someone as talented as Emily is.  Emily answered with a very astonished “thank you,” and then voiced her mutual admiration.

Emily and Cathy Rigby

Emily and Cathy Rigby

Much to everyone’s surprise, Cathy gave an impromptu demonstration of Peter Pan’s audience fly-over.  In a flash, she launched into the air.  As my eyes followed a sparkling rain of fairy dust from Cathy, down to the empty seats, I discovered Emily- alone in the center of the downpour- with her palms up, eyes squinting at the sky, and a smile that could outshine Tinker Bell any day.
