Broadway Dallas News | SEPTEMBER 2023

Posted on September 26th, 2023

Dear Friends,

The temperature has finally broken (Hallelujah!!) and that means it’s almost time for our new Germania Broadway Series season. (BTW – It’s not too late to sign up for a 5-show season subscription. See details and link below.) We can’t wait for you to share this upcoming lineup with your friends and family at the Music Hall.

Earlier this month we celebrated National Arts in Education Week as enacted by Congress. Broadway Dallas is so proud of the work we do in this area. Whether it’s our dedicated free performance for Dallas ISD students and teachers, our annual High School Musical Theatre Awards program, or the dozens of teaching artists we embed in local public and private schools, this is the work that fulfills our mission to share the spirit of Broadway with everyone. We are changing lives one theater experience at a time! Read more about our amazing programs at www.broadwaydallas.org/education.

See you in the lobby!

NATIONAL ARTS IN EDUCATION WEEK

Passed by Congress in 2010, House Resolution 275 designates the week beginning with the second Sunday in September as National Arts in Education Week. During this week, the field of arts education joins together in communities across the country to tell the story of the impact of the transformative power of the arts in education. We celebrated by highlighting our various education programs across our social channels.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Bishop Arts Theatre Center (BATC) is kicking off their 30th Anniversary season with the world premiere performance of Franky D. Gonzalez’s new play, The Tragedy of Othello. This adaptation will retain the original plot but employ a modern aesthetic, language, and time period based in Dallas. The play centers on the difficulties and obstacles of Imani Othello who has been named the first black woman head coach of a major football team. The incredible Denise Lee will breathe life into the indomitable spirit of Othello.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

Our spotlight this month is on Lynn Fisher, Director of Corporate Giving for The Rosewood Corporation, a longtime supporter of Broadway Dallas’ education programming. Fisher has a unique perspective of being an institutional funder as well as one of being the mom of two participants in Broadway Dallas’ High School Musical Theatre Awards program.

Fisher attributes her sons’ participation in HSMTA as a leading contributor to their success in careers outside of musical theater. “If a student can prepare and participate in a performing arts program, then they can give a presentation in the boardroom. The rigor required to be successful on stage, in the orchestra pit or behind the sound board transfers over to all aspects of careers beyond high school.”

From the funder’s perspective, Fisher believes exposing students to performing arts early is good for our community. “Dallas has a rich and thriving arts community, but it is only as strong as the handoff to the next generation. By supporting education programming such as HSMTA or Give A Kid A Seat, we will be growing future ticket holders, season subscription members, and volunteers to support our Broadway Dallas for years to come.”
